| Installing Prehung Barriers |
|
Doors come in standard widths of 30, 32, and 36 inches. Here's how to install prehung doors: 1. Set the door unit in the framed opening and insert wood shims near the hinges until the frame is plumb. 2. Nail through the door unit frame and wood shim into the doorway frame. 3. Install shims around the perimeter of the door unit frame making sure that the door operates smoothly and is level and plumb. 4. Remove the excess shims. You will be applying finish molding around the opening to cover the frame and shims. Prehung windows are installed in a similar manner. The primary difference is that the lower edge of the window is shimmed and nailed first, then the sides and top. The manufacturer's installation instructions come with prehung windows and doors to tell you how to install the units.

Doors and windows are commodities. That is, you can go down to your favorite building material store and buy doors in their own frame all ready for insertion in a doorway. Windows, too, come prehung.
