Page 1 of 2 Your finished basement plans probably call for installing new walls. A wall is a vertical structure member which encloses, divides, supports, or protects a building or room. Your basement's exterior walls are the foundation walls. You'll be installing interior walls.
Tools needed for wall construction are basic: a saw to cut and a fastening tool to connect materials. An inexpensive power saw will cut the time needed to build or frame walls so it's typically a good investment. Buy a quality carpenter's hammer for nailing. A pneumatic nail gun is faster, but the cost is prohibitive for most do-it-yourselfers. You can rent one by the hour, day, or week from larger rental centers, or borrow one from your flooring supplier, if available.
As homes are built, wall framing is fastened to the wooden subfloor below. However, when installing walls over concrete, special nails or tools are needed to fasten the wood to the concrete floor. Use masonry nails or masonry screws (in pre-drilled holes) to fasten wood to concrete. Alternately, there are adhesive products that can be spread below the wall during erection to bond the wall and floor.
New wall framing also must be attached to foundation walls. As with floors, you can fasten the wood wall frame to the concrete wall using masonry nails or screws. However, remember to prepare the foundation wall surface first with moisture barrier.
