Toilet Installation

Here are the steps to installing a replacement one- or two-piece toilet:

1. Make sure that water source is turned off and that the area is ready for installation of the new toilet unit.

2. Turn the bowl upside down and install a new wax ring and sleeve on the toilet horn (directions are on the ring box).

Remodeling Savings

What’s the difference between a single-piece and two-piece toilet other than the obvious? Cost! A single-piece toilet is more difficult to manufacture so will cost more to buy. In addition, it weighs more than the individual components of a two-piece toilet so more difficult to move. However, installation is approximately the same for either model.

3. Turn the bowl upside down and install a new wax ring and sleeve on the toilet horn (directions are on the ring box).

4. Carefully position the toilet over the toilet flange and lower the toilet into position. This is a much easier job if you have a helper.

5. Press down on the toilet bowl to compress the wax ring, then install and firmly tighten the washers and nuts.

6. If installing a two-piece toilet, install the tank next. Install the spud washer (included) and center it over the inlet opening, then install and firmly tighten washers and nuts.

Remodeling Tips

If you don’t have much room in your small bathroom, assemble a two-piece toilet outside of the room and carefully bring it in for installation.

7. Attach the water supply line to the tank. If necessary, refer to Bathroom Plumbing on installing fixtures to change the water supply line.

8. Mount the toilet seat.

9. Turn on the water supply line, let the tank fill, and flush to test.
