| Lavatory Installation |
|
A lavatory is a built-in wash basin, typically installed in a cabinet. A free-standing wash basin also is called a lavatory—as is the room in which they are housed. In this website, a lavatory is where you wash your hands. Here’s how to install the two primary lavatories. Installing a built-in lavatory: 1. Attach the vanity cabinet to the wall, making sure that the sink will be above the drain line protruding from the wall. 2. Place a level on top of the cabinet and insert thin wooden shims under the vanity as needed to make sure that it is level. Remodeling Tips Most bathroom vanities don’t have backs, only a supporting cross-member. If your cabinet has a back, determine the correct location on the wall for the vanity then mark the location of the pipes and cut holes in the back of the vanity so they can pass through the back once installed. 3. Find the studs in the wall (using a stud finder or tapping on the wall for non-hollow areas) and attach the cabinet to the wall with screws. 4. Install the vanity top following directions that came with the unit. If building your own top, install a ¾-in. cement board base over the top then install the tile, Formica, or other final surface following manufacturer’s directions or Section 17. 5. Install the sink, fastening it to the cabinet from the underside using a screwdriver or from on top with silicone caulking depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations. 6. Follow manufacturer’s directions or Section 18 for installing the new faucet(s) and attaching the water lines. Installing a free-standing lavatory: 1. Set the base and pedestal in position to check for fit. Most free-standing lavatories are two-piece with a basin and a pedestal. 2. Depending on the model, mark the floor where the pedestal will be attached to the floor. Also mark the wall as needed for installation of the basin. Follow manufacturer’s directions as there are many types and installation methods. 3. Remove the basin and pedestal and set the aside. As needed, mark and drill holes in the floor for installation of the base. 4. Install any mounting hardware needed for attaching the basin to the wall. If necessary, attach the base to the pedestal. (Some models are connected after installation.) 5. Install the base and pedestal in position. 6. Connect water supply and drain lines as needed. Follow manufacturer’s directions or Bathroom Fixtures for installing the new faucet(s) and attaching the water lines.
