Installing Fixtures

Toilets and lavatories (sinks) are relatively easy to install, even for the first-time do-it-yourselfer. If your half bath remodel only requires that you replace a toilet and/or a lavatory you may not need to read beyond this section. If your remodel requires adding or moving pipes or getting farther into the plumbing system you will need the more extensive instructions in Bathroom Plumbing.

What will you need to install a toilet or lavatory? You’ll need the chosen plumbing components, various readily available tools, space to work, and some time. How much time? Depending on what preparation is required (removing the old tank, subfloor repair) the job could take a full day. However, if you are simply installing a new toilet where the old one went, plan on doing the job in 2-3 hours. If you’re prepared and have a little plumbing experience you can get it done in less than an hour, like the plumbers do.

Materials you need include the toilet itself (one- or two-piece), toilet wax ring, and assembly hardware. You’ll also need a toilet flange and water lines available from your hardware or plumbing store. If installing a new lavatory (cabinet and sink) or freestanding sink you’ll need the components standing by.

Remodeling Tips

Don’t forget to measure! Take a measurement from the toilet flange floor bolt to the wall behind the toilet. Most toilet flanges are installed 12 in. from the wall.

Tools are as simple. You’ll need a wrench (adjustable, ratchet, or basin), a screwdriver, and any tools required for installing or replacing the water supply line. To install the lavatory you’ll only need adjustable wrenches and a screwdriver unless you also are installing or moving supply lines.

Remodeling Tips

Remember the adage: If all else fails, read the directions. That is, make sure you pick up and read the manufacturer’s direction sheet for fixtures you buy. Some are unclear or misleading as they try to cover too many models or aren’t up to date. However, most instructions are helpful. Reading them over in advance may save you time and frustration.
