Half Bath Fixtures

As you discover when shopping for plumbing fixtures, there is a wide variety to choose from. Your remodeling plans will include sizes and dimensions, but may not be specific otherwise. Here are some guidelines for selecting half bath plumbing fixtures:

* Vitreous china is still the most common toilet material but various plastics are increasingly popular.

* Toilet tanks can be included in the toilet (one piece), attached to the toilet (two piece), or separate with the tank attached to the wall (Victorian).

* Tank widths vary from 20 to 24 in.

* Toilets project 26 to 30 in. from the wall.

* The nearest fixture to the toilet side should be no less than 15 in. from the center of the toilet.

* There should be a clear space of at least 21 in. deep in front of the toilet.

* Low-flush toilets require less than 2 gallons per flush, about one-third that of older toilets.

* Pump and pressurized toilets are available for basements and other below-grade applications.

* Sink sizes vary from 12 to 30 in. or larger.

* Sink shapes can be round, oval, square, or rectangular.

* Freestanding sinks are increasingly popular, designed to sit atop a cabinet.

* Pedestal sinks take up less space than cabinet mounted sinks, but don’t offer storage.

* Purchase your toilet, sink, and cabinets before starting the remodel to make sure that the model you want is available.

Remodeling Tips

Freestanding and pedestal sinks also are available in wall-hung versions that give them more structural support.
