Bathroom accessories shouldn’t be an afterthought. They should be part of your bathroom remodeling plan. Make sure you know where the toilet roll holder, towel rack(s), mirrors, lighting, and other components will be installed before you begin. In fact, it’s a good idea to buy them even before you start the remodel so you are sure you’ll have them when ready. You also may refer to them for sizing and placement questions as you remodel. Remodeling Tips Running out of space around your bathroom toilet? Install a recessed toilet roll holder for slightly less protrusion into the room. If you are installing accessories such as grab bars for the toilet, get a copy of the ADA Guidelines for locations. Because some components require reinforcement you should know exactly where they are going well in advance so you can make any needed modifications to the walls. Here are some guidelines: * Grab bars should be 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 in. thick and mounted so there is at least 1-1/2 in. space behind the bar for gripping. * Side bar near the toilet should be at least 12 in. from the back wall and 42 in. long. * Rear bar behind the toilet should be at least 24 in. long (36 in. is preferred) and extend toward the access side of the toilet. * Grab bars should be mounted horizontally 33 to 36 in. above the floor.
