Basic Half Bath

Because the typical half bath is less than 25 sq.ft. in size there may only be one or two variations to the layout of the two primary plumbing fixtures: toilet and lavatory. Layout is even more limited if access includes two doors or the room is located under a stairway where headroom is at a premium. Once you have your basic half bath design, here are some project guidelines:

* Make sure that water, electrical, and other utilities are shut off to the room before working

* Remove old components that will be replaced

* Prepare all surfaces, repairing as needed

* Paint or resurface all walls and ceilings

* Install new moisture-resistant flooring as needed

* Install a two-piece, floor-mounted tank-type toilet of vitreous china

Remodeling Tips

Some building codes require that any new or replacement toilet must be a 1.5 gallon water-saver toilet. Older models had 3 and 5 gallon tanks. Make sure you know what local codes require before selecting a new toilet. If in doubt, ask your materials supplier.

* Install a vanity base cabinet and vanity top

* Install an 18 in. round or oval porcelain-coated cast iron or similar sink, also known as a lavatory

* Install faucets and other lavatory fixtures

Remodeling Tips

Remodeling contractors remind you that you get what you pay for. Don’t go cheap on faucets and fixtures. Today’s special price may be tomorrow’s repair.

* Install a wall-hung medicine cabinet

* Install towel bars, toilet paper dispenser, storage shelves, and other accessories

Remodeling Savings

You can save money on your medicine cabinet by purchasing an inset model that fits between wall studs. It’s cheaper because the sides don’t have to be finished as they don’t show.

Bathroom Systems offers the specific steps for each of these tasks. This action list is for initial planning.
