Think of a shower as a stand-up bathtub. Many prefer the shower over the tub for cleaning and relaxing, so many homes have both. The most popular shower is actually the tub shower combination. It’s especially popular in new homes and is installed even before other interior components because it is so big that the house is built around it. Remodeling Tips A shower drain is 2 in. in diameter and a bathtub drain is 1-1/2 in. in diameter. Showers need a larger drain for faster drainage because they don’t have depth to hold excess water. Prefabricated showers and tub showers are available as single units or as components, more popular with remodelers. Materials include fiberglass or acrylic. Showers also are built at site using ceramic tiles. Remodeling Words Component shower units are comprised of a shower base and separate walls and are designed primarily for remodelers who must get the unit into an existing space. These units are commonly called knockdowns or KDs. Standard showers are 32, 36, or 48 in. wide with 36 in. being most common. Standard height is 73 inches.
