| Selecting a Bathtub |
|
There is a wide variety of bathtubs available of various designs, sizes, and materials. Which should you choose for your full bath remodel? In some cases, the best tub is the one that is already in place. You may be able to repair or refinish it, saving time and money. If not—or if you’re just tired of the old tub—all you have to do is visit a large building material or plumbing supplier to be amazed at what is available. Most modern bathtubs are made of fiberglass, solid acrylic, or coated cast iron. Fiberglass tubs are the least expensive, but the finish doesn’t last as long unless treated with an acrylic topcoat. Solid acrylic tubs are lightweight and more durable—and more expensive. Most whirlpool and specially shaped tubs are made of acrylic. Cast iron tubs have been around the longest and will last the longest. They are coated with a porcelain enamel. Bathtubs that abut a wall typically are 32 in. wide by 60 in. long. Elongated tubs are 72 in. in length and special tubs can be found in widths of 24 to 42 inches. Standard heights range from 12 to 20 inches with 14 inches the most common height. Bathtubs can be installed on the floor, on a platform above the floor, or into the floor. However, building codes will require grab bars land steps or treads for anything other than standard on-the-floor installation.
