Removing Fixtures

Preparation is getting the location ready for the fixture. If you’re simply replacing one built-in acrylic tub-shower with a newer version the prep may be as simple as removing the old unit. The process to removing a bathtub is:

1. Separate the tub from the walls with a utility knife and pry bar.

2. Remove the drain and any other fixtures within the tub.

3. Lift front edge of the tub from the floor with a prybar.

4. Pull the tub away from the wall.

5. Remove the tub from the room. If necessary, cut a fiberglass or polymer tub up using a reciprocating saw for easier removal.

Removing a fabricated shower is relatively easy:

1. Remove all fixtures including faucets and drains.

2. Remove the sidewalls from the walls with a utility knife and pry bar. If tile, you may or may not decide to remove all of the tiles depending on what will replace it.

3. Lift the front edge of the shower base from the floor with a pry bar.

4. Remove the shower base.

5. Remove the shower components from the room.

From this description you can figure out how to remove a tub-shower combination. Remove the shower walls first, and then the tub that also serves as the shower base.
