| Installing a Shower |

Like tubs, installing a replacement shower with a similar unit is a fairly easy job. Even replacing a fiberglass unit with a fiberglass-base/tile-wall shower is not much more difficult depending on whether you’re moving the drain or the faucets. Instead of installing fiberglass walls you simply install tile ones. Here is the process for installing a replacement shower panel kit: 1. Install the drain in the shower base (sometimes called the “pan”) and tighten. 2. Apply dry-set mortar to the subfloor where the base will be installed. 3. Lower the shower base into place over the drain and place it in the mortar, adjusting the base as needed to make sure it is level. Allow the mortar to set for 8 hours or as directed by the manufacturer before continuing. 4. If included with the kit, install the shower dome following the manufacturer’s instructions. Most domes require additional framing and lighting. 5. Install the shower door mounting strips to the frame for later installation of the door. 6. Accurately measure and cut holes in wall panels to accommodate faucets and other accessories. 7. Assemble the shower panels. Many manufacturers use a corner clip system on the back corners. 8. Apply waterproof panel adhesive on the bare walls where the shower walls will be installed. 9. Carefully slide the shower panel assembly into the alcove and press the panels against the walls. 10. Use padded scrap lumber to press the panels against the walls so the adhesive bonds tightly. 11. Install the faucets, shower head, and other finish plumbing components. 12. Seal the seams around the base with tub caulk. 13. Install the shower door following the manufacturer’s directions. Again, for a tub-shower combo, install the tub then follow the instructions above for installing the shower walls.
