| Installing a Bathtub |

Installing a replacement bathtub is relatively easy and, once prep work is done, should only take a few hours. However, a replacement tub is one that doesn’t require any plumbing changes. You’re replacing an old unit with a new one of the exact same size and fixture location. If you are installing a different size or style of tub the preparation becomes more complex—moving supply pipes and drains, moving walls, or replacing a shower with a tub. That’s when you need the advanced plumbing tips offered in Bathroom Plumbing. Here are the steps for installing a replacement bathtub once the preparation work or other remodeling work is done: Remodeling Tips Make sure you install the drain flange and any stopper mechanism before you completely enclose the bathtub. 1. Attach the tub rim to the wall studs, adding shims as needed for an even edge. 2. Attach the drain and overflow to the appropriate pipes using plumber’s putty. Most drains screw into place and overflow covers are attached with two screws. 3. If the tub has shower walls above it, install them (below) before installing fixtures. If the walls above are to be tiled, install the tile. 4. Caulk or seal the joints between the tub and walls as needed to minimize water damage to surrounding surfaces. 5. Install the faucet(s) and spout. That’s how the job goes. Depending on the complexity of your remodel, these instructions may be sufficient to replace your bathtub with a new one. If you are installing a whirlpool or other special tub, basic instructions are in Bathroom Plumbing.
