Posts and Supports

Unfinished basements typically have posts and other supports that hold up the house’s main floor. These posts are installed were required, not necessarily where they are most efficient for installing walls.

Remodeling Words

A post is vertical support member, usually made up of only one piece of lumber or a metal pipe or I beam.

For example, your home’s main floor has numerous walls, some of them are designed to hold up the roof or upper floors (bearing walls) and others are simply room separators (non-bearing walls). The bearing walls are built to serve both as support and as separators. The bearing posts in the basement, however, were installed to support only.

That means your basement may have posts smack dab in the middle of a room you’re planning. They will become a challenge in designing and finishing your basement. You can either move them (a tough job) or work around them. As you seek and visualize living space in your home’s basement, be aware of existing posts because they impact your living space.
