Ingress and Egress

Another requirement of living in your finished basement is being able to get in and out—ingress and egress. Besides making good sense, there are building code requirements, primarily for bedrooms because that’s where people sleep.

Building codes say a bedroom must have an exit, usually a window, with an opening of no less than 5 square feet and a minimum width of 24 inches. In addition, the lowest edge of the window must be no more than 44 inches from the floor. Those are the minimums. Practicality dictates that bedrooms for small children are even closer to the floor.
