Estimating Access

How can you calculate the square or cubic footage of an area that you can’t get in such as in an adjacent crawl space? By estimating.

Remodeling Words

A cubic foot is an area 1 foot long by 1 foot wide by 1 foot high or deep. It’s 1 square foot in the third dimension. A cubic foot is 1,729 cubic inches. A cubic yard (3 X 3 X 3) is 27 cubic feet.

If you have access to the outside of the space, such as the house’s perimeter, measure it. If possible, insert a broomstick or other object of known length into the space and use it to estimate widths and lengths. Or you may be able to feed a metal measuring tape into the area to get approximate dimensions.

Fortunately, because you won’t be using these areas for living space you don’t need exact dimensions. However, knowing their approximate size can help in planning.
