A sauna is a room where the bather is cleaned with steam rather than water. Typically, water is poured over red-hot rocks to produce the steam. Many people prefer a sauna over an immersion bath or a shower. Others want all of the above for their bathroom. Because a sauna is a room, construction is covered more fully in Section 16 on walls and flooring systems. Below is an overview of the process for those who don’t need advanced instructions. Once the room is built, wired, and plumbed, the sauna heater unit and controls are installed. Make sure that the room you build is air-tight so that moisture doesn’t seep into walls, floors, or other rooms. In addition, make sure that the sauna heating unit you select is adequate for the room you build. If underpowered you won’t get adequate steam and if overpowered you could get too much. It’s better to get one a little larger than needed and turn down the controls as needed.
