Installing a Sauna

Saunas can be as simple as an ex-closet retrofitted as a one-person sauna with heater or it can be a larger room with heater and built-in shower. Most saunas are installed indoors adjacent to a bathroom, but they also can be installed outdoors as a separate structure.

Saunas can be planned from scratch, customized to fit your home or they can be purchased as indoor kits or outdoor prefabs. Kits require your labor, but typically come with good assembly instructions. Make sure the manufacturer you select also has a customer service line that you can call if you run into problems.

Assuming that you are building your sauna from scratch, here are the steps to sauna construction:

1. Construct the walls either as tip-ups or built-in-place following your building plans. Make sure you include vents according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

2. Install electrical receptacles and switches for the heater units and lighting.

3. Insulate the room per the building plans, then install the vapor barrier.

4. Install the flooring material.

5. Install paneling on the ceiling and walls.

6. Install trim molding covering joints between flooring, walls, and ceiling.

7. Install wall supports and slat benches.

8. Install the door jamb, pre-hung door, and trim.

9. Install the heater unit, control panel, and lighting fixtures.

10. Test your new sauna room.

Of course, there’s more to remodeling an extended bathroom than these short instructional lists. Some do-it-yourselfers can build from them, but most need additional step-by-step instructions on specific aspects: plumbing, wiring, heating, walls, cabinets, and fixtures. Bathroom Systems offers clear instructions that you can use when remodeling any bathroom.
