Lighting Basics

Lights are simply bare wires that make it so difficult (but not impossible) for electricity to run through them that they glow during the effort. The bare wires are surrounded by gases to enhance the light for the least amount of electricity.

Lighting fixtures are the components that house the electrical lights. Fixtures include the mounting plate, wires, bulb receptacles, and sometimes switches. The electrical wiring and mounting box are installed in walls during what’s called the rough-in and fixtures are installed during the finishing phase.

Installing lighting fixtures is relatively easy as most manufacturers include an instruction sheet that shows how the fixture is installed according to the NEC or CEC. For simple lighting fixtures, the black wire on the fixture is attached to the black electrical circuit wire, white to white, and ground to a grounding screw in the electrical box. Lighting fixtures that include fans require more complex wiring, but packed instructions will show you how it’s done. If in doubt, hire an electrician.
