Installing Wiring

Once the electrical terminal box is installed in the bathroom, feed the wire cable from the service panel or a subpanel to the fixture. This may not be so easy depending on whether the wall is open or closed. If open you will drill holes in successive studs until you reach the fixture.

If the walls in between—or at least some of them—are closed, you will have to “fish” the cable through the walls. The easiest way typically is drilling a hole through a top or bottom plate in the wall above or below the electrical box, running the wire through the hole, then running it to the panel between floors of the home. Local electrical code will dictate more specifically what you can and cannot do. You may decide to hire a pro electrician to do this job. Or you can buy a “fish line” at larger hardware stores and follow the instructions that come with it.

Remember when you run wire to always allow an extra couple of feet of cable on each end. Cable is relatively cheap and you don’t want to wind up with a short cable and have to replace it with a longer one.
