Installing Receptacles

Are you ready to finish the circuit? With a few basic tools you now can install electrical receptacles, lighting fixtures, and control switches in a relatively short time. Here’s how:

1. Make sure that electrical power to the circuit is off.

2. Cut the wire cable to a length 6 to 8 inches beyond the front of the box.

3. Use a cable ripper to remove the sheathing from the wire cable inside the box.

4. Use a wire stripper to remove the last inch of insulation from the end of each covered wire.

5. Use a wire nut to connect the ground (bare or green) wire to the receptacle, fixture, switch, or box.

6. Use a wire nut to connect the white (neutral) wire to the receptacle, fixture, or switch.

7. Use a wire nut to connect the black (hot) wire to the receptacle, fixture, or switch.

8. Mount the receptacle, fixture, or switch on to the electrical box with screws (included) and install any cover plates.

Some electrical components are a little more complicated, such as three-way switches and lighted fans, but most come with specific installation instructions.
