Electrical Code

Can you wire your bathroom’s electrical system? Probably. Most local building codes allow homeowners to wire or rewire their homes. So the question is: Should you wire your bathroom? The answer depends on your experience with electricity, how much time you have, and your budget. Remember that many thousands of homeowners have successfully wired or rewired their homes. You can, too.

Most city and county building departments use a standard set of rules for electrical systems. In the United States it’s the National Electrical Code (NEC) and in Canada the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC). Your local building department and technical bookstores have published resources that can help you understand and apply these electrical codes. Most methods make sense when you think about them.

Electrical codes standardize how electrical systems are installed for the safety of current and future occupants. For example, electrical codes typically require that receptacles (plugs, outlets) are installed 12 in. from the floor and no more than 12 ft. apart along walls. Code also dictates how many and what type of wires are used in residential electrical systems.
