Sheathing

Sheathing is simply a covering. For modern walls, that means drywall, a flat gypsum plaster sheet encased in paper. In special applications it can be plaster or stucco, though these are more difficult surfaces for the do-it-yourselfer to install.

Most interior drywall is covered in a gray or white paper. Drywall used in moisture areas such as in bathrooms and showers is sheathed in green (or sometimes blue) paper and is called green board. It is relatively waterproof. Later in this section you’ll see how to install drywall sheathing including taping.

The other task in sheathing is painting the surface. It’s a relatively easy task that requires just a few basic tools and materials. In fact, it is one of the most common jobs in bathroom remodeling. Dramatic changes can be made in a bathroom with a facelift that includes painting.
