Installing Doors and Windows

Doors, windows, skylights, and other barriers are installed after the interior walls are sheathed or closed. Fortunately, modern doors and windows are pre-hung, purchased as a package that includes casing and trim making installation easier. Here’s how to install a pre-hung door:

1. Verify that the rough opening is correct (instructions with the door include specific dimensions).

2. Make sure that the opening is square and level.

3. Unpackage the door assembly and remove the skid (bottom) board used for support in transit.

4. Based on the manufacturer’s instructions, prepare the door’s threshold now or once the door is installed. Also remove any trim as indicated by the instructions.

5. Center the assembly in the opening and tilt it up into position.

6. Plumb the door frame on the hinge side, using screws to temporarily fasten the frame to the stud.

7. Plumb the door frame on the latch side, using screws to temporarily fasten the frame to the stud.

8. Insert wooden wedges or shims behind the hinges and other points around the frame for support.

9. Make sure the door frame is plumb and square, and then finish attaching the frame to the studs following the manufacturer’s instructions.

10. Remove any shipping clips that hold the door closed.

11. Install and/or adjust door locks and hardware.

12. Install insulation as needed between the opening and the door assembly.

13. Install trim.

14. Apply caulk around the door.

15. If not previously required, install the threshold.

Installing pre-hung windows and skylights is similar to that for doors. Once the opening size and squareness are verified, install the pre-hung units, fasten them to the frame, remove shipping clips, and add the trim. When installing a skylight, think of it as a roof window rather than a wall window.
