| Framing a Wall |
|
Framing a new wall is relatively easy. Refer to your remodeling plan for location and dimensions as you perform the following steps: 1. Cut the sole or bottom plate to length and fasten it to the subfloor with nails. 2. Use a plumb line to determine the exact location for the top plate directly above the bottom plate, and then fasten it to the ceiling. 3. Cut, install, and fasten wall studs between the top and bottom plates, making sure they are plumb. 4. As needed, install headers and cripple studs for window and door openings. In new construction where the roof is not yet in place you can build the walls horizontally on the subfloor and tip them up into position. If there is sufficient room and clearance in the new bathroom you can build and tip as well, then install thin wood wedges above the top plate to hold them in place. Just make sure that the walls are square and plumb.
