Contractors and Suppliers

Unless you plan to do all the work yourself, remodeling a bathroom requires contractors, subcontractors, or hired labor. Bathroom Experts covers hiring remodeling experts.

A contractor or general contractor is a construction manager and often an experienced tradesperson (carpentry, electrical, plumbing) as well. A subcontractor typically works for a general contractor by providing a specific trade or skill such as electrical or plumbing service. Alternately, you, the homeowner, can hire a subcontractor directly to tackle jobs you don’t want to or feel qualified to do yourself.

If you have the needed skills but need some help you can hire labor. It may be a handyperson, a college student, or even a relative or friend to help you with the physical aspects of remodeling. In any case, part of preparing for remodeling your bathroom is making sure you have or can hire the skills and labor needed to do the job quickly, efficiently, and on budget.

For smaller remodeling jobs, spending a weekend morning buying materials is sufficient. However, adding a bathroom to your home typically requires more materials—and that means you should shop around for the best prices and delivery options. You may be fortunate and find a single supplier nearby that can furnish you with all lumber, utility, and remodeling materials needed at reasonable prices. In most cases, however, it will take two or three suppliers to get everything you need.
