Vent System

As noted, waste line traps keep sewer gases from entering the rooms. Where do these gases go? Modern plumbing systems include a system of vent pipes that allow the gases to escape to the atmosphere outside of the home. Water is heavier than air so it makes sense to have these vent pipes exit out the top of the residence. They are single pipes with the end open but covered to keep rain out. Most homes have more than one vent pipe, depending on how close together the plumbing systems inside the home are located. It may be more efficient to have separate vents rather than to tie them all together.

Remodeling Words

A soil stack is the main vertical pipe into which all waste from the home is delivered for distribution to the drain line. A vent stack is the main vertical pipe that vents gases from the soil stack.
