| How Plumbing Works |
|
One system delivers cold and hot water to each of the fixtures in the room, as appropriate. All of the fixtures in the bathroom except the toilet require hot water. (Most bidets require hot water.) Because you don’t want cold and hot water to commingle until it gets to the faucet, the water distribution system has two separate subsystems: hot and cold. The other system removes drain water from sinks and waste from toilets, meantime venting gases and odors. The waste and gases are all taken outside of the home for distribution. Your home already is constructed so making changes to the plumbing system requires remodeling it. How extensive the remodel job is depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. Are you moving primary fixtures or simply replacing them? Let’s take a closer look at how the plumbing system and its subsystems work together to distribute water and collect waste.

Plumbing is your home’s water distribution and waste collection system. Fortunately, it’s actually two interdependent but not connected systems.
