Bathroom Requirements

Before we move on to “what’s in your bathroom,” lets consider some of the requirements that new bathrooms must have. After all, you probably will need a building permit to do this remodel and permits are only issued if the plans comply with local building codes. Maybe the bathrooms in your home, built years ago, don’t even comply with current building codes. If so, you’ll probably have to bring them up to code standards to get approval.

Remodeling Words

Building codes are a collection of written legal requirements for the construction or remodeling of habitable and related structures.

In addition to codes there are some good-sense design issues recommended by the remodeling industry to make the finished job more livable. Here are some of the code and good-sense requirements for remodeling a bathroom:

* Bathroom doorways should be at least 32 in. wide.

* Walking areas should be at least 36 in. wide.

* Lavatories or vanities typically are 30 to 32 in. high, but can be built up to 36 in. for taller people.

* The center of a sink should be at least 15 in. from the closest wall, and 18 in. for washing hair.

* Dual sinks should be apart at least 30 in. center to center.

* Sinks should be at least 8 in. from a counter edge.

* Allow at least 16 inches from the center of the toilet to any other object.

* Allow a 48 in. X 48 in. space in front of the toilet for access.

* Install the toilet paper holder 26 in. above the floor and 6 in. beyond the front of the seat.

* Make sure the shower is at least 34 in. X 34 in. in size.

* Install the shower door to swing out of the shower and into the room.

* Enclosed toilet areas should be at least 36 in. wide by 66 in. deep.

* Enclosed toilet area doors should swing out of the area and into the room.
