Changing Tubs and Showers

Tubs and showers, too, have fresh water lines (hot and cold) and a drain line. In many cases, you can replace the existing tub or shower without having to move any water or drain lines. The real challenge is getting the old unit out and the new unit in to the room. Fortunately, you can buy a remodel tub or shower that is manufactured to go through a doorway. (New home builders often use single-piece tub and enclosure units or shower units, placing them in the room before the walls go up.)

What becomes more challenging in changing a tub or shower is moving the drain line or converting a tub enclosure into a shower. In these projects the drain and water lines must be moved, necessitating tearing into the floor and wall. Again, the benefits can well be worth the work, but you should know what you’re getting into.

Want to do a bathroom makeover, but just can’t see yourself moving the drain or water lines? Hire a plumber to help plan the job and even to tackle the toughest parts. You can learn enough from the plumber to do the next tough job yourself.
