Changing Toilets - Page 2
The toilet unit is attached to the waste plumbing using a floor flange. It’s the mouth of the waste pipe. Two bolts hold the toilet tightly on the flange. In between is a soft gasket to keep the connection from leaking. Other than that, the only connection is the water line that comes in from the wall and connects below the tank. So replacing a toilet typically requires removing the old unit and putting the new one in its place.

Remodeling Words

A flange is a connection between two plumbing components such as a toilet and a waste pipe.

There’s more to the job if you are moving the toilet. You must then move the drain pipe and the water source pipe. Because the drain and flange are in the floor you probably will have to remove some flooring to make the change. If the water line is moved you’ll be tearing into a wall. Again, these are jobs within the capabilities of most do-it-yourselfers, but you need to be aware of what’s involved before you decide that it would be nice to have the toilet moved two inches to the left. Considering the work and additional expense, maybe you’ll opt to leave it where it is. Or maybe you’ll go ahead and move it to an even more convenient spot.
