Page 1 of 2 The most difficult aspect of installing an exhaust fan is determining where to locate it for optimum ventilation. In most cases, remodelers install exhaust fans above and in front of the toilet, though it may be located between the toilet and the shower depending on the configuration. Once the probable location is known, here’s how to install a standard exhaust fan with ductwork: 1. Drill a hole through the ceiling about where you will install the fan, then insert a wire through the hole so you can find the hole from above. 2. In the attic or crawl space above the bathroom, pull back the insulation where the wire has come through. 3. Place the exhaust fan box over the marker wire and against the closest rafter or joist to determine where it will finally be mounted, then drill holes at the four corners of the box to mark its location. 4. In the bathroom, place the exhaust fan box between the four hole in the ceiling to verify, then mark the perimeter with a pencil. You should have drawn a rectangle with a hole in each corner. 5. Use a keyhole saw to cut around the box outline. 6. From above the room, install the exhaust fan, attaching it to the adjacent rafter or joist. 7. Follow wiring procedures in Section 14 to install the electrical components of the exhaust fan. Some fans require an on-off switch in the circuit while others have automatic switches in them that require no additional wiring.
