| Installing a Space Heater |
|
If you are adding a space heater to your remodeled bathroom where none has been, installation depends on whether you must cut a hole in the wall and run wiring or the drywall isn’t yet in place and you can install the unit without obstruction. Let’s assume the worst and see how a space heater is installed in a new location on a finished wall. 1. Use a stud-finder to identify the location of wall studs near your proposed site for the space heater. The location should be selected based on the shortest distance for wiring to be run. 2. Use a keyhole saw to cut a small hole in the wall near one stud to confirm the location of the stud. 3. Place the heater housing against the wall where it will be mounted and mark the perimeter on the wall with a pencil, then remove the housing. 4. Install the electrical circuit to the hole where the heater will be installed. 5. Following manufacturer’s instructions, attach the heater housing to the stud(s) and install the wall heater. 6. Install the cover plate on the wall heater, turn on the circuit, and test the heater. Installing a radiant electric baseboard heater is similar to a space heater except that the heater is mounted on the floor and against the wall instead of recessed into the wall. In fact, the job is a little easier because the wiring can be run under the floor and into the unit rather than through the floor, then through the wall, and into the unit. The disadvantage to a baseboard heater is that most models don’t include a fan to circulate the warmed air. If you are upgrading or replacing an existing wall-mounted space heater the job will be relatively easy depending on whether the units are identical in size and configuration. Make sure you get the model number and measurements of your existing system and take them when shopping for a new unit. Electrical supply stores and larger home centers can tell you what replacement and upgrade models are available for specific model space heaters manufactured over the past few decades. In fact, the latest replacement of the old model may be quieter, more efficient, and even more powerful than what it is replacing. Even if you’re not seriously thinking about replacing the existing space heater take a look at what is available.
