Installing a Lavatory Drain

Installing the drain and trap requires a little more skill, but is well within the range of most do-it-yourselfers. What you’re doing is connecting up the sink flange with the drain pipe that exits the wall. The only tricky part is installing the trap. Here’s the process:

1. Insert a short pipe, called the tailpiece, into the drain spud.

2. Align the trap-to-drain line with the drain.

3. Mark the bottom of the tailpiece where it needs to be trimmed to fit inside the trap.

4. Cut the tailpiece to the correct length.

5. Install and tighten the tailpiece, trap, and drain line.

If you are installing a stopper you’ll need a special tailpiece that includes a lever for moving the stopper inside the pipe. Otherwise, water would leak out of the hole in the tailpiece. Stopper systems include installation and adjustment instructions.
