Installing Trim

Trim is a necessity. It covers the rough edges of construction. Trim is applied around doors and windows to cover the frame. It also covers the edge between the walls and floor.

Trim is also a luxury. Special trim such as wainscoting decorates walls. Ornate ceiling molding adds beauty to a room. Some pre-hung doors and windows include standard trim molding.

Remodeling Words

Molding is a wood or plastic strip that has a curved or projecting surface and is used for decorative purposes.

Molding is relatively easy to install. Only basic tools are needed.

* Finish hammer and nail set

* Miter box

* Miter, back, or coping saw

* Finish nails

Exact installation depends on the design of the molding. Simple door and window molding simply butts a vertical piece against a horizontal one. No special angles to cut. Corner molding typically requires an angle cut; that’s where the miter box comes in.
