Even if you’re hiring someone to do the work while you run off to sip in the sun you’ll still need to plan and pay for the project. So it’s a fair question to ask yourself: Is a bathroom remodel really worth the trouble? The answer depends on whether the cost is an investment in your home. Will you live in the home long enough for the equity increase to overcome the cost? Is the cost an investment or an expense? How Long Will You Live Here? It’s impossible for most folks to know exactly how long they will live in a specific home before moving on. Jobs change. Life makes unplanned announcements. Other investments ripen or go sour, altering finances. However, what’s your best current estimation of how long you expect to live in your current home? The answer is important because bathroom remodeling can be an expensive project, typically costing $4,000 to $25,000 or more. In addition, you may not get all of your investment back if you must sell your home with a partially remodeled bathroom. In areas where home values appreciate fast, remodeling a bathroom can be an excellent investment that multiplies potential profits from the sale of your home. In places where home values increase slowly—or actually go down—some of the money spent on remodeling a bathroom may be lost until the home appreciates more in value.
