Even if you’re planning to remodel the bathroom yourself and you have a source for funding, consider asking one or two contractors to bid on the job. If nothing else you’ll learn how contractors work. They may bring up some options or some problems you may not have considered. How can you get a bid? Many consumers start with the telephone book or at a local building material supplier’s store. Check ads in the phone book and look for business cards on the store’s bulletin boards. You’re looking for licensed contractors who have experience remodeling bathrooms. The next step is to simply call up the contractors and ask for a bid. If they try to give you a bid over the telephone, don’t bother with them. A bid should be in writing and be based on a visit to your home to see what they’ll be dealing with.
