Specialty Contractors

A general or remodeling contractor typically is a boss who may hire other contractors—called specialty contractors—to do much or even all of the work. A contractor also may hire laborers to help out with the low-skill work. If you are your own contractor on this remodeling job you need to know how to hire specialty contractors, often called subs, and laborers to make the job go easier. You don’t need more problems.

Remodeling Safety

Many states and provinces have workers compensation programs, paying them if they are injured. The compensation typically is too small to encourage widespread abuse, but some workers abuse it anyway. Note that if you hire “employees” you may be subject to workers compensation laws and be required to pay toward the insurance. The construction industry is one of the most dangerous and has higher workers comp premiums than others. Before hiring anyone contact your state labor board through the number in the government section of your regional telephone book.

There is a wide variety of specialty contractors from which to choose, each with an area of expertise. Let’s take a look at those specialties and the contractors that do them.
