Design Elements

A recent NKBA Design Trends Study first notes an increase in remodeling jobs due to a downturn in the stock market. People are investing money in their homes—with greater dividends. Here’s a summary of that study:

* More elaborate and luxurious bathroom styles are increasingly popular as more people stay at home.

* Sleeker European designs are preferred for many new bathroom remodels.

* Neutral colors are more popular for fixtures and flooring.

* Woods cabinets are increasingly popular, especially cherry and maple.

* Bathroom faucets are often nickel plated rather than stainless steel.

* Granite counter tops are very popular.

* Cabinets are being designed to look more like furniture.

* Simple cabinet hardware is being replaced by decorative designs.

* Showers are becoming more elaborate with multiple shower heads.

* Entertainment systems are being included in many new and remodeled bathrooms.

* Environmentally friendly products and designs are increasingly popular.

* Many new bath designs include a baby changing room or area.

* Upscale bathrooms/relaxation rooms are including beverage bars with refrigerators, coffee maker, and even microwave ovens.

* Consumers are more knowledgeable about design and price conscious than in the past.
