Design Categories

To help out, here are some descriptions of popular home designs. Use them as a guide to help you analyze your own preferences as well as relate them to designers.

* Arts & Crafts (Mission): simple geometric patterns, gentle lines, cherry-stained oak, copper, stone tile

* Contemporary: minimalist, high tech, clean lines, soft or bright colors, laminates, chrome, glass

* Country (Farmhouse): pine or oak, painted or stained furniture, handcrafted, patterned tiles, coarse fabrics, nostalgic

* Traditional: classical and elegant with richer woods (mahogany, cherry), porcelain, silver, and strong colors

* Victorian: darker colors, curved woods, overstuffed upholstery, stenciled cabinetry, lace, fringe

* Eclectic: all of the above and whatever you want.

Of course, there are many other design categories including some you can make up yourself. Many people start with a photo, a piece of hardware, a favorite bathroom fixture, and build from there. Take these ideas to a bathroom store or plumbing retailer to expand your ideas. Get all the inputs you can.

If you get stuck, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Once you’ve narrowed your ideas down you can hire a bathroom designer to help you finalize your design, saving money. The designer can help you determine accent colors or embellishments that can dramatically enhance the design and long-term enjoyment of your remodeled bathroom.
