Design Basics

What do you need to know about design to make decisions about your remodeled or new bathroom? You need to know what you like and how to achieve it. Design is the implementation of style so let’s first consider what styles you like.

Styles can be categorized by eras they reflect when or where they became popular: colonial, modern, neoclassic, French, Victorian, Arts & Crafts, etc. If you’re not familiar with these styles of furniture and decorating, visit a large furniture or decorating store and ask for an education. Many stores will share information with you because they know that knowledge leads to sales. In addition, I’ll summarize popular styles below.

Additionally, styles can be categorized by colors, shapes, and textures: earthy, bright, soft, ornate, subdued, etc. Many people determine what they like in colors and shapes, then select eras or periods that closely match them. For example, preferring pastels and older looking furniture may lead you to pine cabinetry with pastel milk paints accented by simple bronze faucets. If you like simple lines of 1920s furniture, consider Arts & Crafts, also known as Mission, style.

Most important, make sure that the colors, style, and design you select reflect your lifestyle. Are you formal or informal? Do you like softer colors, simpler patterns, and curved edges or is your taste more toward brighter colors, busy patterns, and striking angles? You can carry your home’s theme into the bathroom design—or you can do something very different. Hey, it’s your bathroom!
