Bathroom Designers

The day of the utility bathroom is fading. In its place is a multi-functional bathroom that serves more than just hygiene needs. It is a place to relax, a personal hideout where one can take a long bath or an invigorating shower. A bathroom is no longer a chamber pot and a wash bowl in the corner of a bedroom.

Because you’ll be spending more time in the bathroom it makes sense to spend more time designing it. Where to start? With your own tastes. You can hire someone to help you draw them out and put them on paper, but it is you who ultimately makes the decisions.

I’ll give you some tips on hiring a professional bathroom designer in Bathroom Experts. Meantime, here’s a summary of what they do.

A designer is a consultant. She or he uses knowledge and experience—and lots of people skills—to help you make decisions on what you want. As mentioned earlier in this section, the designer typically is paid a fee or percentage for professional skills, or design services may be included in the pricing. No matter how it is paid, you are paying it. Make sure it reflects your own tastes and don’t get talked into something you know you ultimately won’t like.

There are various trade associations for home remodeling designers. One mentioned is the National Kitchen and Bath Association. Another is the American Society of Interior Designers. Many people prefer NKBA members if they are remodeling a bathroom or kitchen and ASID members for larger remodeling jobs that encompass more elements of the house. Still other people can get enough design help from an architect or even a design student to make needed decisions.
