| Installing a Tile Countertop |
|
If you are installing a ceramic tile countertop, the underlayment of particleboard or plywood is the base for the tile and requires full installation to the cabinet. You can install an underlayment as support for the splashboard or you can install the tile directly on to the wall. Here are the steps to install a tile countertop: 1. Determine the location of the first or front row of tiles and mark the back edge. 2. Use a square to draw a large X at one back corner of the first tile. The arms of this mark will align all subsequent tiles. 3. Apply adhesive to the underlayment following manufacturer’s directions. 4. Place the first tile and insert tile spacers between tiles as you continue placement. 5. At the rear edge, use a tile cutter to trim tiles as needed to fit the available space. 6. Set the tiles by carefully pounding down on tiles using a mallet and a wooden block wrapped in cloth. 7. Remove the tile spacers. 8. Spread the grout mixture (following manufacturer’s directions) over the tiles and into the open space between them. 9. Wipe away excess grout and let the grout dry following manufacturer’s directions. 10. Once the grout is fully dry, apply penetrating sealer to the grout. 11. Caulk seams as needed for a tight, waterproof perimeter seal.
