Page 1 of 2 The installation of countertops can vary because there are many types of tops. Solid tops such as pre-form counters require less work than ceramic and laminate tops. In fact, depending on the cabinet you purchase you may be able to buy a countertop that requires nothing more than attachment to the base. What all countertops have in common is that they need to be prepared for the sink. Solid countertops require that a hole be cut through the top. Built-in-place countertops have a hole cut in the underlayment, and then the surface (ceramic tile) is installed. Here are the steps to installing a typical countertop: 1. Measure the base cabinet length and add 1 in. for the overhang. 2. Cut the countertop to length. If the surface is finished, cut from the bottom side to minimize chipping of the surface. 3. Place the sink in position and draw a cutline inside of the perimeter . Alternately, some sink manufacturers include a template for cutting the sink hole. 4. Drill a pilot hole in a corner of the outline, then use a jigsaw to cut the perimeter line. 5. Install laminate surface and edging as needed, depending on the type of countertop you’re installing. If ceramic, install the underlayment before installing the tile.
