Cabinet Construction

Cabinets are empty boxes to be filled with sinks, drawers, and things to store. The component that holds it all together is called the frame. The bottom is called the base floor. The front is called the face, made up of horizontal rails (top, intermediate, bottom) and vertical stiles. Doors are hinged from the stiles and drawers slide in and out on runners or glides. Some cabinets have backs while others are open-backed. All have a countertop into which the sink and faucet are installed. The lowest part of the base is recessed, called the toekick, to allow you to get closer to the front edge of the cabinet.

The two common types of hinges are framed and frameless. Framed hinges have a hinge bolt exposed while frameless (called European) hinges don’t. Framed hinges come in various shapes depending on whether the door is mounted into or in front of the cabinet frame. Cabinet latches include friction, roller, magnetic, and touch latch.
