Have you decided yet whether you will use a contractor or do the remodeling yourself? The answer greatly impacts the final cost. As covered earlier in this section, the cost of labor typically is at least half the total cost of a typical remodel. If the needed bathroom remodel costs just won’t fit your current finances, consider doing some or all of the work yourself to save money. You’ll also learn new things, which can be fun. Most people who remodel have a Plan A and a Plan B. That is, if they can get sufficient financing they will upgrade the new tub to a whirlpool; otherwise they will replace the existing tub with a free-standing unit. Or the options may be to upgrade the toilet if there is no need to make floor repairs once remodeling has begun. Options are good. Make sure that your plans, estimates, and budget match the alternate plans. Also make sure that the remodeling timeline allows flexibility between the various options so you can “change your mind” without ripping out something you just installed.
