Budget Adjustments

These are guidelines for typical bathroom makeovers. Remember that facelifts—replacing surfaces and smaller fixtures—is much less expensive both in materials and labor. In fact, a facelift can cost 25 to 50 percent that of a makeover, and even less if you do all the work yourself.

On the other hand, if you need to add a room on to your home for a new bathroom you’ll also need to add on the cost of new construction. That’s more difficult to ball-park estimate, but you could start with a figure of about $200 sq. ft. in addition to the makeover. The range is wide from less than $150 sq. ft. to add a dormer to over $350 sq. ft. to install a small room with a new foundation and a revised roof system. Your mileage will vary.
