Selecting an Architect

Do you really need an architect to help you design a bathroom addition? Maybe. The answer depends on the complexity of the addition and how comfortable you are with doing your own design work. I’ll give you more tips on hiring architects and other experts elsewhere on this website, but you should begin considering the option now as you think about adding a bathroom.

An architect is someone trained and experienced in the design of structures. That’s pretty broad, so you want an architect that is experienced with bathroom additions and remodeling if possible. Some states license architects and others don’t, but many are members of the American Institute of Architects (A.I.A.). Others are certified by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (N.K.B.A.).

Architects can be paid by the hour or by the job. The job price can be a flat fee or a percentage of the total value of the remodel, typically 8 to 15 percent. If the job is small, there may be a minimum fee. Good advice is to ask for an initial consultation, either free or an hourly fee, to determine whether you want to use an architect and, specifically, this one.
