Doing It Yourself

If you’re handy you probably can do a bathroom addition or remodeling project yourself. I’ll show you how in coming sections. You have many options:

* Take some vacation time and do it all yourself.

* Plan the remodel for weekends, evenings, or other time off.

* Do the remodel with a living partner, sharing the work load as time and skills allow.

* Hire a contractor to handle the tougher jobs like installing a foundation and framing the addition while you plan to do the plumbing and electrical work.

* Be your own contractor, hiring subcontractors to do their respective jobs and save some money.

* Hire a contractor to oversee your work, giving you one or two days a week of time as your mentor.

You have lots of options. For now, start a list of do-it-yourself jobs you’ve done and what you learned from them. It can help you analyze whether you want to tackle this job on your own or not as well as what specialists you might call on to help. Remember: a half-finished bathroom is useless.
