Adding Walls

The walls are wood or steel frames that sit on top of (and are attached to) the subfloor. The horizontal parts of the frame are called the plates and the vertical components are studs. Studs typically are installed 16 inches apart. Frames are made within walls to hold future doors and windows. The member that’s above a door or window to support weight above it is called the header. The ceiling is built similar to the floor. Above it is the roof system, designed to hold the house together and to stand up to local weather conditions. Before covering up the wall and ceiling frames with drywall, plaster, or other materials, the plumbing and electrical systems are installed, described in the next article.

Walls, ceilings, and floors also get insulation to help retain expensive heated or cooled air inside the home. The insulation is installed before the drywall or other wall covering.
